For about a year after the war, Luna got into painting. Always black, whites, warm greys. Never color. She liked the palette knife the best and sometimes painted with her fingers or hair. When anyone asked her what they were of, she’d say serenely, the reproductive habits of the Dabberblimp. Whenever Harry asked, she’d say simply, the dreams I had when I was in the Malfoy Manor.
Harry buys a whole series of them and keeps them in the attic. Later in life, Hogwarts gives Harry Dumbledore’s old Pensieve. The first time he decants his memories of Voldemort, they look just like those canvases: muddy, indistinct, something buried and dragged back up, half-dead. He doesn’t use it much, after that.
